The Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex in East Austin
The Millennium Action Team
The Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex was created about 10 years ago, in response to the shooting death of a teenager who was simply chatting with friends on an East Austin street corner. The complex was conceived as a fun, exciting and safe gathering place for Austin’s young people. It currently provides access to such activities as bowling, roller-skating, and movies at discounted rates. The Millennium Youth Complex (MYEC) is one of the many reasons Austin was recognized in 2005 as one of the 100 best communities for youth, and the MYEC was tied in the Austin Chronicle reader’s poll for the "Best Recreation Center" for kids.
How many young people in Austin use the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex?
In response to concerns raised by Austin youth who participated in focus groups, the Millennium Action Team is working to increase youth access and utilization of Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex located at the intersection of Rosewood Ave and Hargrave Street in East Austin. In the focus groups, Austin youth expressed the need for “safe places to hang out” and an Austin that is “more affordable for youth.”
The Ready by 21 Millennium Action Team continues to survey community organizations, neighbors, youth and other stakeholders in order to find ways to make the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex more accessible to youth.
